Shop Local In The Melrose Arts District For The Holidays
Did you know, for every dollar spent at a small business, approximately 67¢ stays in the local community? Even if you shop at a franchise, they are typically locally-owned, so shopping in your neighborhood assists your community. This holiday season, please consider supporting the unique, eclectic stores and businesses that make up the Melrose Arts District. A good percentage of our businesses are operating, offering either limited in-store shopping (retail), take-out & delivery (restaurants), by appointment visits (services), online sales, etc. Other ways you can support your favorite local businesses include the following: Buy a gift card: You can give local restaurants more money now by purchasing gift cards you can use later when the restaurants re-open for indoor or outdoor dining. Holiday shop: Rather than purchase from Amazon, buy your gifts from Melrose stores and give them a boost. Tip well: Many servers, baristas, and delivery people have been out of work at some point this year. If you can afford it, leave a big tip and make someone’s day. Schedule and pay for future services: While most salons are closed, some will allow you to pay for services in advance. You could pay for haircuts for the next […]

Tatsu Ramen: The Future of Noodles in LA
In 2014, Melrose became host to the best new ramen restaurant in Los Angeles. Tatsu Ramen, the life passion of Tokyo native Ryu Isobe, brings traditional Japanese ramen to LA. Tatsu means dragon in Japanese and Ryu, being born in the Year of the Dragon, found the perfect name for his restaurant. Walking into Tatsu is like walking into the future. Instead of waiting in a long line at a counter, or ordering with a server that could possible forget something, Smart tablets line the interior wall. Each customer places their order from the simple menu that list 6 types of ramen, 3 rice side dishes, pork buns and, most recently, the ramen burger… don’t ask questions, just order it! Being a bit of a traditionalist, and somewhat of a ramen snob, I ordered the “Bold Ramen” and steamed pork buns. There are a few customizations available (egg yolk, extra onions, extra meat), but I stuck to the original recipe. Feeling a little bit like I was in a Star Trek movie, I swiped my card on the tablet and it spit out a receipt for my order with instructions to show it to the cashier. She took my receipt and I […]

Get Old Fashioned at the Melrose Umbrella Co.
There are bars and there are drink experiences. Melrose Umbrella Co. is the latter. You may think that the incredibly appropriate name comes from the street you’ll find it on, however Melrose Umbrella Co. Is named for former Lord Mayor of England, James Melrose. The logo is a silhouette of a photo of him and if you search around the bar/restaurant, you can find the original portrait of Melrose looking dapper with his ever-present umbrella cane.

Antonio’s: The Heart and Soul of Melrose
In the heart of the Melrose Business Improvement District you’ll find Antonio’s, one of the oldest businesses on the street. Antonio’s has been serving delicious authentic Mexican food for over 30 years. With signature posada and mole dishes, the flavors under their roof are as tasty as they are timeless. Owner, Antonio Gutiérrez, delivers authentic Mexican recipes passed down from his mother, Maria Lopez Gutiérrez. And, if you’re lucky, you can catch Antonio himself behind the bar slicing limes, pouring premium tequila and offering up an easy smile filled with pride. Long before Melrose Ave became the celebrity destination for shopping it is today, stars came from far and wide for the one-of-a-kind flavors and friendly personal service. From Jonny Depp to Christopher Walken to Mick Jagger, the “wall of fame” at Antonio’s is constantly expanding. Antonio’s is a family affair. I was hard pressed to find a staff member that wasn’t directly related to Antonio or married to one of his children. The personal investment in the success of the business results in an attention to detail you can’t find anywhere else. Gutiérrez’s daughter has turned the restaurant into a gallery of Mexican cultural artwork, like day of the […]

L’Assiette Steak Frites: Unexpected
Melrose Avenue is the place to go when you want to experience something eclectic, something original or something you didn’t know you wanted until you discovered it. In fact, sometimes you come across food that you start to crave as soon as you taste it. At L’Assiette (“the dish” in French), this experience can be had every time you walk in. As soon as you step through the door, you’re reminded of why eating in West Hollywood is so fun. The service is top notch, yet entertaining, the ambiance is classic yet artsy and the same thing can be said for the patrons. It’s a great mix of cool and classy. The mahogany panels serve to highlight the old-school nature of the restaurant, while the service reminds you that you’re in modern day Melrose – full of life and character. The real attraction is the steak and frites. We’re not talking ordinary steak with ordinary fries, there’s an art to making this french classic. The secret is in the sumptuous steak sauce and the way the fries are perfectly seasoned and cut. There’s a lot to be said when a restaurant specializes narrowly the way L’Assiette does. By specializing in only one cut, the coulotte steak (sirloin […]

Rise and Shine With Melrose Umbrella Co. Craft Coffee Bar
When owners Zach Patterson, Austin Melrose and Christine Solomon were building Melrose Umbrella Co., they envisioned a well-crafted and comfortable location to enjoy espresso, coffee and tea. This sentiment was continually echoed and affirmed by the neighborhood. After a year and a half of operating their cocktail program, they have now officially launched their long-awaited Craft Coffee Bar—evolving the space into the special and unique imbibery that they’ve always wanted! To accomplish their goal of creating an all-day destination they sought out a barista with the inspiration, expertise and passion in creating a program that paralleled their existing cocktail program. Program Manager, Matt Sala, describes his approach to coffee as holistic and individualistic with a dedication to providing guests with a uniquely tailored experience. He has put together a menu that includes Single Origin Coffees from countries around the world, including Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador. Ethiopia, Guatemala and Kenya. Guests can enjoy Melrose Umbrella Company’s unique and cozy atmosphere while sipping Espressos, Americanos, Cappucinos and a variety of Lattes and Mochas. And for tea lovers, there’s a fine selection of intriguing iced and hot teas including Camellia Sinensis, Green, Oolong, Black and Herbal. Also available are breakfast pastries by […]

Headline Records: D.I.Y. Depuis 1995
For people that remember Melrose Avenue in the 1980s and 1990s, Headline Records is a capture of that time when mohawked punkers with spiked wristbands were the in-crowd. For those that don’t remember, the shop is easily the best place in Los Angeles to find punk, garage, ska, and hardcore music and gear. But everyone knows the French guy that is holding the torch for old-school music retail in his legendary Melrose Avenue record store. Jean-Luc (John) Gaudry was a young man managing a grocery store in France, and approaching his 30s with a mission. “I started to work at 15 years old, and around 30 I wanted to do something very extreme. Music was my passion for a long time, so I decided why not try to live my passion, a record store, and why not in L.A., the capital of punk rock?” he recalls. “I have only one life, let’s do it!” From years of ordering vinyl, tapes, and ‘zines through the mail from all over the world (yes kids, that’s how we did it back then), John had forged relationships with players in the scene. He also vacationed in Los Angeles in the ‘80s almost every year. […]

Welcome To Playground LA: Two Dance Masters Open A Studio On Melrose, And It Gets Hot Pretty Fast
In the 20+ years that Robin Antin’s work has been in pop consciousness, she’s never had her own dance space. For Kenny Wormald, acting and teaching around the world were his focus. Yet the two long-time friends, in a moment of creative synergy, decided to partner on a studio that came to life on Melrose just a few months later. Playground LA is a fresh, fantastic workshop where the pros make things happen, students learn from the best, and the public can join in to get hot, sexy, and fit. L.A native Robin Antin is a multifaceted entrepreneur who most famously created The Pussycat Dolls in 1995. The live burlesque-inspired show featuring celebrity guests started at the Viper Room, moved to the Roxy, then went worldwide when Interscope Records signed a girl group version featuring Nicole Scherzinger. 20 million albums later, the Dolls brand extended to a Vegas casino, a TV show, fitness DVDs, a lingerie collection, and more. While growing this girl power empire, Robin never gave up the dance. She choreographed for American Idol, The Tonight Show, The Emmys, and The Academy Awards. She formed and choreographed two other girl groups, platinum-selling Girlicious and the newest, GRL. So […]

La Créme Café – Euro Eats, Organic Treats and Macaroons By The Dozen
Bulgaria is a European country, bordered by Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, Turkey, and the Black Sea. With beautiful beaches and mountains, it is a big tourist destination and hence, attracts the best service industry professionals. Stoian “Stoli” Genoff, co-owner of La Crème Café, is continuing a family legacy that began in that vibrant country. His father owned a restaurant, and the family all worked together “in one of the most difficult businesses in the world,” recounts Stoli. He was a bartender, and his younger sister Anna was a waitress. Stoli moved on to tend bar around Bulgaria, and was promoted to manage one of the top restaurants in the capital city of Sofia. While this was a significant position, Stoli was in his late 20s and had other ideas. He moved to another international tourist destination: the islands between Italy and Africa called Malta. His initial reason for relocation is unexpected. “First of all, I wanted to learn English.” Malta is an English-speaking ex-British colony. Stoli further explains, “I went for two semesters at one of the most prestigious colleges in Bulgaria. If you practice English for only 45 minutes during class, but are surrounded only by people who speak […]

Six Spots for Happy Hour on Melrose
The genius institution of Happy Hour dates back to the early 1900s when the United States Navy encouraged regularly scheduled social hours, full of entertainment and smoking. Prohibition can be thanked for translating boxing and cigarettes on Navy ships to getting some drank on at a speakeasy before heading out to a dry restaurant. After that, “Happy Hour” became a thing for all of us to enjoy. Many of the fine establishments on Melrose have generous and delicious Happy Hour offering to end your day or kick off your night. THE PARLOR The Parlor is a sports lounge, with more than 50 televisions showing everything from baseball to the Olympics in a sophisticated, spacious setting. Given Southern Cali’s likelihood of awesome weather, the patio garden space with fire pits is a perfect option to catch the last rays of sun or relax into a gorgeous evening. Happy Hours are Monday – Friday, from 3p – 7p, giving you quite the early jump on the evening buzz. Draft beer selections are only $5-6, craft cocktails are $10, wine and well drinks a mere $6. Food specials run $5 -9, and include homemade hummus with veggies and pita chips, quesadillas, a variety […]

Eight Spots Where Celebrities Shop on Melrose
Photo above courtesy of Sportie LA. There are plenty of reasons to do your shopping on Melrose Avenue. 1. It’s a cool and trendy place. If you want to find edgy, indie, and international fashion and art, you come here. 2. It’s also quite classic so if you’re into high quality vintage clothing and music, you’re in good shape. 3. Excellent options for food and drink to keep your energy up. 4. The celebs know 1-3 and also do their shopping on Melrose. Any day of week you’re likely to see a famous face, and the paparazzi parade that follows. Since forever, Melrose has been the go-to street for rock and roll fashion. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, punk and metal bands flocked to the only alternative clothing shops in Los Angeles to find the latest in spandex and spikes. Not much has changed. Some of those classic rockers still frequent the Avenue’s trendy rock shops for stage gear. Six Great Spots For Vintage Tee Shopping on Melrose
Melrose Avenue has always been a place to find both trendy styles as well as excellent vintage clothing. Vintage tees are a great way to express your personal style, whether kicking back with jeans and sneaks or dressing up with a skirt and jacket. Before you overpay on eBay, head over to Melrose and have fun poking around the racks of these shops that carry quality, variety and your next favorite t-shirt. Whether you’re a collector looking for the official Guns N’ Roses 1992 tour jersey or a baseball fan hoping to find an old Cubs tank top, this is place to go. Really hard-to-find items are abundant. Some can be pricey, but competitive. The shirts are clean (not stinky or holey) with a decent size selection.
