Neveux Creamery: It’s All About Flavor

Flavor is key at Neveux Artisan Creamery, where owner Leo Neveux offers a rotating selection of ice cream that often combines both sweet and savory tastes. The cozy and cool shop also serves a range of coffees and teas, from espresso and cappuccino to Art of Tea and Halo flowering tea.

With more than 25 flavor combos such as Salted Caramel, Strawberry Balsamic, Honey Lavender, Rosemary Butterscotch, Crème Frâiche, Caliente Cinnamon Chocolate, Cherry Chai Latté, Rhubarb Mint, Espresso Caramel, Coconut Curry Lemongrass, Maple Fig, Roasted Banana, Pineapple Sage, Chocolate Grapefruit, and Toasted Marshmallow, there’s something cold and delicious for everyone.

“I’ve been on Melrose Ave. for almost six years now,” Neveux says. “The idea for the business started when I was living in San Francisco. There was an ice cream place up there which was my first exposure to the sweet and savory genre of ice cream. I was blown away by what they were doing.”

His interest in the flavor combinations he tasted led him to create his own ice creams. “I started making my own flavors, then I decided I was done with my corporate job, and I came back to Los Angeles. I opened up the shop, and started developing more and more,” he explains.

Neveux likes to say he was saving the city from frozen yogurt. And he may just have succeeded.

His shop features seasonal favorites that he rotates throughout the year, but hasn’t stopped creating new ones either. “I’m always thinking about new flavors,” he attests. Asked about his most unique flavor, he says currently that title belongs to Rosemary Butterscotch. And while customers are drawn to that taste, it’s not necessarily his most popular.

“Our most popular it is hard to say, it varies,” he relates. “It goes between our Salted Caramel, Honey Lavender, Roasted Banana, and Toasted Marshmallow. It used to be when I first opened that it was always Salted Caramel, but that may be overdone at this point. Pretty much everyone has that flavor now in different forms or iterations.”


Neveux says that his location on Melrose brings lots of foot traffic into his shop. “We have a lot of repeat customers from the neighborhood, the local business is always good and steady. But we also have tourists and visitors. People come in from all over the Los Angeles area, Long Beach, the Valley, even Westlake Village. They come here because they love our ice cream.”

And where else would they find such cool offerings as Pineapple Sage, Blueberry Chevre, or Caliente Cinnamon Chocolate? With toppings like chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, whipped cream, and ground espresso, indulging a sweet tooth at Neveux’s shop is an experience that would be hard to recreate elsewhere.

A gift of olive oil from a neighborhood family let Neveux work on  a new combination of basil and lightly peppery olive oil which may not immediately sound like an ice cream flavor, but becomes a creamy, smoothly textured taste. But the flavor of Chocolate Grapefruit may the most intriguing of all: combining the zesty, slightly sour citrus with rich chocolate.

The only way to tell what flavor is best? A taste test of course.
